The Spectrum: Fresh off ‘Mary Poppins’ filming, Dick Van Dyke coming to Salt Lake Comic Con

(The Spectrum)  His roles are iconic. From Burt in “Mary Poppins” and Rob in “The Dick Van Dyke Show” to D.A. Fletcher in “Dick Tracy” and Cecil in the “Night at the Museum” films, Dick Van Dyke has been a staple in entertainment culture since he made his television debut 60 years ago.  He can be seen in the upcoming “Mary Poppins Returns” as the Young Mr. Dawes (he famously played the senior Mr. Dawes in the 1964 film). But before the latest iteration of the Practically Perfect Nanny hits theaters, fans will be able to see Van Dyke in person at Salt Lake Comic Con 2017.

“I don’t really consider myself a fanboy,” says SLCC Founder Dan Farr. “The driver for me is I get excited because the fans are excited. It’s a little more rare that I get really excited about certain guests.” Van Dyke is one of those “certain guests.”  Farr and Van Dyke have actually known each other for many years – the two met at a convention more than 15 years ago and bonded over 3D illustration. They even collaborated on a children’s book, “Mr. Finnegan’s Giving Chest,” which included an audio version read by Van Dyke.

“There’s been a special place in my heart for him,” Farr says. “Even though I already have a long-standing relationship with him, he’s probably toward the top of my list of people I’m excited to have come out.” (…)
